The Iraq War was neither well planned nor conceived, yet the War in Iraq has everything to do with the War on Terror because the war on terror is about freedom.

Rate the Iraq War: Which side are you on?

Friday, October 27. 2006

I'm not going to defend the Iraq War, at least not much. I think it was horribly planned and poorly conceived. Nonetheless, Saddam had to go and Iraq is better off without him.

No doubt Iraq has turned into an ugly war, but that has nothing to do with Saddam. Yet, the French Revolution was ugly. So, too was the American Revolution and the American Civil War, yet each -after many years - was better for humanity. Each of these revolutions ultimately lead to more freedom.

I think the War in Iraq could lead to a better humanity and more freedom, however, it certainly won't if we just flee Iraq. Then the terrorists do win.

And let me be clear. I completely believe the war in Iraq has EVERYTHING to do with War on Terror.

Why? Because the War in Iraq, just as the War Against Terror, is really about nothing short of freedom itself.

Islamic fundamentalists, including Bin Laden, have repeatedly expressed their disdain for the West, especially for the West's freedom. They hate our movies, our music, our religions and our women - let me get back to that one.

Consequently, how would freedom in Iraq challenge the rest of the Middle East? Would it finally push the Iranian people, most of whom want some sort of Democracy, to revolt against the fundamentalists controlling their country?

Imagine a Middle East with Iraq and Iran as democratic partners. That's a pretty scary thought, especially for Islamic fundamentalists.

Still don't believe the War Against Iraq and Terrorism are about freedom?

Well, just ask the women in Iraq and Afghanistan that are risking their lives to fight for women's rights what they think about freedom. Ask them why they are dying and why they are willing to die just for speaking about women's rights.

"What UNIFEM is seeing on the ground — in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia — is that public space for women in these situations is shrinking," Heyzer said Thursday. "Women are becoming assassination targets when they dare defend women's rights in public decision-making." (more)

Bin Laden, Iraqi insurgents and most Islamic fundamentalists don't believe in the type of freedom that supports women's rights.

As another example, witness Australia's Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali, the nation's most senior Muslim cleric, whom claimed that women who do not wear the veil are like 'uncovered meat' who attract sexual predators. (more)

So, according to the Islamic fundamentalists, most Western women are just 'uncovered meat'?!

Certainly, there is nothing wrong with being anti-War. There is nothing wrong with being against the way the Bush administration handled Iraq. Still, understand that freedom isn't free.

Ultimately, however, the War in Iraq and the War on Terror are about one thing, freedom.
