Why do dolphins save people?

Are dolphins smarter than we think?

Over the years I have read numerous stories of how dolphins have saved the life of humans. Earlier this year, dolphins saved surfer Todd Endris.

Why?

Are dolphins smarter than we realize? Do dolphins, for whatever reason, feel an affinity towards humans versus other animals? Are many animals more than just dumb animals?
