Steak at Smith and Wollensky - Las Vegas
January 26th, 2009
A nice steak on the stripI was hanging out with a group of people this weekend in Las Vegas and we decided upon a nice steak. We were on the strip, but we wanted to get out and take a walk, so we picked Smith & Wollensky. Since we had such a large group we had to spend some time in the bar, which was a nice place to hang out. However, if you are used to drinking for free (well, minus the gambling losses) in Vegas, then don't spend a lot of time in the bar because it isn't cheap. It's not chic-expensive, but it is strip expensive. The bartenders were pretty cool overall, but they still had a bit of a steakhouse attitude. I say chill out. We looked like a pretty scraggly group, I admit, but we dropped a lot of money and tipped better than the service warranted. Yet, we probably would have spent more if the bartenders were a little less uptight. Anyway, I ordered a filet mignon, medium rare, and I had some mashed potatoes, asparagus and creamed spinach to go along with it. For the price, I thought it was great. My steak was pretty tasty and HUGE. It was more towards medium than medium rare in my opinion, but not enough to disappoint or return. Nonetheless, it was seared perfectly - something which makes a steak, in my opinion. Just enough to caramelize a little fat. Following dinner we all had some desserts and shared. Overall, the desserts were the most disappointing part of the meal. I think it would have been best to leave the meal at the steak and a glass of port. They weren't bad. They just weren't great and didn't match the quality of the steak. Despite a few small issues, I'd definitely return to Smith and Wollensky for a filet, minus the dessert.
