The York in Highland Park Rating
October 6th, 2008
One of Highland Parks Best Highland Park in Northeast Los Angeles is a great place to find a taco or a burrito, and any number of Mexican favorites from throughout Mexico. From taco trucks, aka roach coaches, and sit down restaurants, great Mexican food is an easy find in the HP. Aside from Mexican food, the choices quickly diminish. In recent years, however, a number of new establishments have opened up in Highland Park, and the far majority of them are on York Blvd. This Sunday, I stopped by The York, on York Blvd, a place I've frequented a few times, for Sunday brunch. That's right Sunday brunch in Highland Park, and there's no menudo. Who would have ever thunk such a thing? The York and York Blvd have become hot spots for night-time hipsters, but brunch brings a tamer crowd. Still, at any time, The York is hipster hangout. This particular Sunday, Spencer of HGTV fame and a common site at HP hotspots, was in the House. Still, the York isn't a place to star watch. Spencer is real people folks. So, don't ask if he's that guy from HGTV. He is. Now, let him get his drink on. But, let's get back to The York. The cheeseburger and fries, and the fish and chips are two big sellers at The York. Both are quite good and not typical bar fare. Instead, The York puts a premium on quality ingredients, as well as care in their cooking. For instance, The York's french fries and, especially the home fries, are some of the best I've ever had. The York offers a pretty extensive, but selective menu, and the prices are on the high end for a casual restaurant, but most items are worth the price. For brunch you can also find omelets, including egg-white only ones, salads, pancakes, french toast and eggs benedict. The regular menu is far larger and quite diverse. The selection of wine and beer is superb. If you need a break from the Silver Lake or Eagle Rock scenes, check out the York.
