The President of the
College Republicans at Boston University is offering a
scholarship that is for whites only.
Before you call such a
scholarship racist, please take into consideration that
there are scholarships that are only available to
non-whites. Are those scholarships also racist?
Supposedly, the white
scholarship was created to show "how
ridiculous it is to have any sort of racially based
scholarship."
"We
believe that racial preferences in all their forms are
perhaps the worst form of bigotry confronting America
today," stated Joe Mroszczyk, president of the
College Republicans at Boston University.
Consequently,
the College Republicans are offering "a $250
Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship.
Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of
3.2 or higher; they must write two essays; and, here's the
kicker, they must be at least one-quarter Caucasian."
Others
don't like the idea.
"We
have to look at the situation honestly," said David
Coreas, the 21-year-old senior who is president of the
Latino fraternity Phi Iota Alpha at BU. "Caucasians
tend to have a higher per capita income than Latinos and
other minorities. We have to have scholarships to
survive."
Now
I'm white, so let's get that on the table.
Anyway,
I once heard Jessie Jackson give a speech about poverty in
America and he stated that there are more white people
whom live below the poverty line than all minorities
combined.
Hmmm.
So, honestly, poor white people should be discriminated
against because some white
people are extremely rich?
While
I understand the 'level the playing field' argument, I
think making a statement such as "We have to have
scholarships to survive" demonstrates the hypocrisy
and ignorance of many whom support affirmative action.
The
facts are clear. Honestly, there are MORE poor white people that
need scholarships to "survive" than there are
minorities that need scholarships to "survive".
To
disregard that fact due to race is, well, racist.
Rate
affirmative action. Rate a whites only scholarship. Is one
more racist than the other? Add your comments below.
