There is a lot of buzz on
the Internet right now because of a so-called
clarification of the government's abstinence program,
which now includes adults up to the age of 29.
Critics say the
government is selling ideology.
"They've stepped
over the line of common sense," said James Wagoner,
president of Advocates for Youth, a Washington, D.C.-based
non-profit that supports sex education. "To be
preaching abstinence when 90% of people are having sex is
in essence to lose touch with reality. It's an ideological
campaign. It has nothing to do with public health." (more)
Others, however, say
abstinence does work.
Ultimately, critics claim
that teaching abstinence is fine, but it should be
included with teaching safe sex, such as using a condom.
Can a sex education
program really work if only talks about abstinence? Rate
abstinence. Is it a good sex education program by itself,
or should abstinence be part of a larger sex education
program that teaches other forms of safe sex, such as
using a condum?
